Pittsburgh lax – Andy DeMichiei Class of 2013

Low and Away Attackman Andy DeMichiei was listed as a top 2013 recruit by ESPN. Andy is getting a lot of interest from a number of division 1 schools including Marquette, Villanova, High Point, Lehigh, Lafeyette, UMBC and others.

I have been coaching Andy since Low and Away began last year. He first participated in our clinic series last winter, since then he was on our U-17 team in summer 2011 and is sure to be a top attackman on U-19 team this Summer alongside other talented Pittsburgh laxxers.

Andy is a small guy who immediately showed me he has instincts that aren’t found very often. He is a very complete attackmen in terms of dodging, feeding, inside and outside finishing, and his best attribute that is crucial to being a good lacrosse player, his toughness. He reminds me of myself as a D2 attackmen in Pittsburgh, isn’t on the best squad; although very young and determined, they are held back by being in D2. He continues to work hard, and you can tell he thoroughly enjoys playing this sport and continuously getting better. While his highlight tape is pretty good, it doesn’t show his initiating ability the way I see it. Check it out below.

There are a lot of good Pittsburgh players that are capable of playing at the next level but there are a few qualities that separate Andy from the rest. He is very proactive about contacting coaches and staying active in the off season. Andy also doesn’t seem to get frustrated about getting ferociously dissected and constructively criticized by our staff or his HS staff. He may have a different stance on this, but I would say he takes everything in the way I used to. This is purely speculation but as one of his Coaches, I see him subconciously thinking “don’t tell me I am not doing everything very well, I am good at this game” aka playing with a chip on your shoulder. Nevertheless, we stay on him pretty hard in hopes that he will one day look at the “never good enough” approach of instruction we give him, and be thankful. The communication between him, his family, and his Coaching staff has been very consistent over the past few months regarding the recruiting process and that will pay huge dividends.

I look forward to traveling to some of his college games and watching him tear up college ball the way Tommy Kehoe, Brendan Young, Carlo Sunseri, Jimmy Mullen, Drew McMinn, Corey O’Neill, Mac Bryson, Ian Wild, Rob Marasti, Zach Boyt, Jeremy Tissenbaum, Chip Young and many others have; and the way Will Round and Chris White, Jake McAndrew are right now. Wow, a lot of Lebo grads listed right there, and although I want to edit those names out because of the colors they wear, without Lebo Western PA loses a lot of creditability. I have a lot of pride as I am sure those guys do in talking about fellow Western PA guys performing at the games highest levels. I hope to see more and more of them, which is why Low and Away exists. If kids are good athletes, coachable, have good attitudes, and work hard, the sky is the limit for Pittsburgh lax.

Enjoy Andy’s recruiting tape:

Here are a list of the other PA players on ESPN 2013 recruits. Andy is in good company. There are others from Pittsburgh that could be listed in my mind but obviously still have a lot to prove, as does Andy or any lacrosse player on the planet for that matter.
